The base engine for the Dodge Ramcharger was a 5. It also had a 35-gallon fuel tank and a maintenance-free battery. Its truck-like body consisted of an extended cab with a very short, covered bed. The seats are positioned to view the road easily. The Ram came in a two-door standard cab or four-door crew cab configuration, each available with either a short bed or long bed. I also have hauled two full-size street motorcycles inside the van and the seat attaching points in the floor work well for tying down cargo.
Also offered were the 5. Steering on the freeway can be done with a light touch and the brakes modulate well. It's perfect for this application, with plenty of room for gear and two people to sleep and stay warm and dry. This would be much better than staying in a tent, at least it would be for me. The instruments are simple and functional and the visibility is excellent.
My van has the 318 V8 2-bbl engine, which is very reliable, but doesn't make a lot of horsepower. Rams came with a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission or a four-speed manual transmission. Too many sensors, complicated repairs etc. It handles well in the city. It's a little difficult to drive on the highway because of its shear size. The floor is low enough to the ground to make loading easy.
We're hoping to another 100,000 miles in it! A large V-8 engine such as the 360 can consume a significant amount of fuel even while at an idle. It comes with two captains chairs in the front and is completely open in the rear for work gear. Primary Use: Utility towing boats, transporting cargo, etc. The easiest way to get the engine out is to drop the k member which included the front suspension. The two-door truck rode on a wheelbase of 117. It is very durable and well built.
Unfortunately a lot of the used ones out there were hammered by their previous owners and not maintained well. The Chevrolet C-Series was the company's full-size truck line for 1985, including pickups and Suburbans. The complete and newly manufactured Dodge 360 engine is available for purchase on the aftermarket. Following Dodge tradition, the Ram 50 had two-wheel drive while the Power Ram 50 name designated the four-wheel-drive model. One time my family decided to go camping with the van. In 1985 this truck had the standard 3. On long trips, the captain's chair is very comfortable and the armrests fall in just the right location.
Its not the prettiest but it'll get the job done. Excellent Do-everything Vehicle — My 1985 Dodge B150 Royal passenger van has been the best vehicle I've owned. I have nightmares about ripped tent flaps, having both my head and feet hitting on the ends of the tent, and mosquitoes buzzing around my head all night. Drive your car or truck with fuel conservation in mind. It towed my tent trailer for camping, and my utility trailer for neighborhood garbage runs and home improvement projects. This van has an all-important feature, a! Big block power and small block mileage. With the short hood, the overall length is shorter than my daughter's Mazda 6 and the turning radius is excellent.
The ride is pretty soft and there is a moderate amount of sway, which is normal for a taller, larger vehicle like this. I enjoy road trips, very similar to my college days, only with an air mattress in the rear. It runs a little 'floaty', but I'm used to high-performance cars. It also has a lot of room inside. They say that it gets between 12 and 15 mpg; not too bad for hauling your house around.
It is a wonderful vehicle to take on vacations, long trips, etc. It is usually a two-person job to remove or install the rear bench seats. Doesn't have too many miles. Being in California you cannot add high performance parts to it either to improve it's efficiency or mileage. It is considered a 90-volt type engine. They could also be folded flat into a full-size bed with storage for sheets and pillows under the seats.
The Vanagons are great campers, but they are not for the mechanically faint of heart. But its a classic, straight body lines and has the all too underrated 318 under the hood which makes this truck have lots of unorthodox. It gets on average around 20 mpg. The C20 designation also applied to the four-door wagon-bodied Suburban, which had a 129. I added heavy duty mats to protect the rear floor as it came uncovered.
